I didn’t need a new job. I needed a new role.

I didn’t need a new job. I needed a new role.

After four and a half years in Customer Services, I am beginning a new chapter as a Technical Trainer. It took me some time to understand what I would need from my work and how to move toward it, so I wanted to share the story behind the change

Starting out during uncertain times

I joined Customer Services during the Covid lockdowns. Everything happened through MS Teams, which made the process of getting to know people a little unusual. I recognized colleagues by their camera backgrounds long before their faces, and I relied heavily on their patience while I was still learning. Thankfully, people were generous with their time and always willing to help.

Customer Services was a great place to grow. I spoke daily with people who needed quick, clear answers, and the role taught me how to handle tricky situations, stay calm, and explain things simply. For a long time, that was enough, and I was proud of the work I did.

Having my cake and eating it too

Over time, my spark faded. I missed having a creative outlet and the chance to build something from scratch. The realization made me feel uncomfortable, because I genuinely like working here. I enjoy the people, the culture, and the way we’re encouraged to develop ourselves.

Instead of updating my CV, I started talking to people internally. One of those first conversations was with the head of the department I have now joined. She helped me see that training might be a better fit, while my colleagues and former manager were incredibly supportive, which made the idea of changing paths feel far less daunting.

Now, I am stepping into a role where I can really think about how people learn, design and extend training materials, and bring more creativity to my work. It feels like the right mix of structure and freedom. I’m meeting amazing new colleagues but still see my former team for coffee or lunch, which makes the transition feel natural rather than like starting over.

It truly feels like having my cake and eating it too.

What I learned along the way

This experience showed me that career growth does not always mean changing companies. With the guidance of our Talent Management colleagues, I knew exactly what to expect and felt supported every step of the way.

If you feel stuck or unsure about your next step, it’s worth taking a look around you first. Sometimes the opportunity you need is closer than you think.

Wondering what your next step could be?
